The apples this season are from our friends at Barnard's Orchards in Kennett Square.
They are being offered in 3lb bags
Varieties available - Stayman, Jonagold, Fuji and Granny Smith
STAYMAN - is a medium-sized, roundish apple with a thick, greenish-yellow skin covered almost entirely with a deep red blush, darker red stripes, and russet dots. Firm, tender, finely textured, juicy, crisp, and yellowish-green, the flesh is tart and spicy. They keep very well, and are used primarily as dessert apples, but also make a fine addition to blended cider.
FUJI - continue to be an unrivaled best-seller. Prized for their crispy texture and intense sweetness, fuji apples are a good choice both eaten raw and in cooked recipes where you want your apples to retain their shape, crispness and provide a sweet flavor.
JONAGOLD - The name Jonagold is a blend of the variety's parent cultivars, Johnathan and Golden Delicious apples. Jonagold apples have a sweet-tart flavor suited for fresh and cooked preparations. The variety was bred to be eaten straight out of hand and is popularly consumed as a snack.
GRANNY SMITH - Granny Smith apples are a beautiful, bright green, very juicy and very firm in texture. This awesome apple's flavor is pleasantly tart-sweet. In addition to raw applications, Granny Smith apples are popularly used in cakes, cobblers, crisps, and pies, as the flesh holds its shape when cooked and does not discolor rapidly.
